I couldn’t really create a website about home windmills without addressing probably the biggest reason why we should all have one.
You must have seen all the media reports. Our Earth may very well be facing serious problems. Really serious.
Glaciers and ice caps are shrinking and dumping their water into the ocean, severe dry spells are killing people, lakes are drying up and the weather has been going nuts.
OK, so the science behind climate change is still being debated, but is it really worth the risk? Shouldn’t we be doing something just in case it is definitely happening.
Unsurprisingly, most people seem to think that there isn’t much that they can do to help our planet out. Most people need some form of transport that uses fossil fuels to get to work. Clearly you can’t choose not to go to work, not if you want to maintain your lifestyle.
And unfortunately in today’s world air travel is important. Even though technology means that we can now converse face to face with someone on the other side of the planet, we still have to transport goods around the globe. You would probably be surprised at just how much you consume or otherwise use has come from across the world.
Cars and aeroplanes are huge users of fossil fuels, the burning of which is contributing to climate change.
So what is there that you can do? Well there are things that you can do to reduce fossil fuel usage. And it starts with generating your own electricity.
Huh? How does generating my own electricity help with reducing fossil fuel usage?
Well, each and every time you switch on a light or start up the microwave oven you are probably contributing to climate change. That’s not supposed to be a throw-away comment or trying to lay down a guilt trip – it’s just simple science.
The reason is that the majority of electricity is coming from the burning of coal, which is of course a fossil fuel.
Coal is probably one of the dirtiest fossil fuels there is. Every time coal is burnt to create electricity, pollutants are released into the air. These pollutants are contributing to the greenhouse effect and changing the climate.
There are alternative sources of electricity, and many of them are being used all around the world. These include hydroelectric dams, geothermal power, nuclear power stations and windmills.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t see myself building a hydroelectric dam in my back yard. And although nuclear power is (supposedly) very safe, you’re not going to see home nuclear reactors any time soon!
However there are sources of electricity that you can tap into, from right in your own backyard. The sun and the wind are both excellent sources of power than can be converted into electricity.
Home windmills in particular are simple and cheap, and can save significant amounts off your power bill.
All you need to understand is how to capture that boundless wind energy, and convert it into electricity.
Home windmills by themselves are not going to save the planet. But you can do your little bit to help and save yourself a lot of money in the meantime!
